Squash Vintage Wins
The 2025/26 Winter squash season is nearly at an end with a few matches remaining. However, Vintage teams (over 55s) have already completed their final matches.
This year we fielded two Vintage Teams (of 3 people per team) in the Surrey Leagues; our First Team had been promoted last year and was competing in Division 1 and our Second Team was newly entered in Division 3.
Both Teams won their Leagues!
The Firsts were in a 7-team division. The team was regularly made up of Ian Chicken, Julian (Julz) Peak, and Peter Crossman, with support from various Seconds “playing up” if needed from time to time. We lost only two matches (both times against Woking), but fielded a more consistent team overall, meaning we beat Woking to the title with 114 points to their 109 (and we won 10 out of 12 games, while they only won 9 out of 12). Many of our matches were 3-0 wins, with our last (against Bourne) being a whitewash (3 x 3-0 matches to win 12 points to 0!)
The Seconds were in a smaller league (5 active teams) and featured a number of players across the season (including Mat Harris, Duncan Howorth, Steve Drye, Barrie Brien, John Prestwich, Paul Gregory, and David Aldridge. The Seconds were not only undefeated (in all 8 matches) but also conceded only 5 games in total! Statistics were: Played 8; Won 8; For 96 (72 wins plus 24 bonus points); against 5! The nearest opponent got less than 2/3 our points (60 to our 96)!
Hearty congratulations to all the Vintage players. It has been a great season and a sign of the strength at OVSC that we can return to putting out two (very strong!) Vintage teams.
